Introduction

The University of Shanghai for Science and Technology (USST) is a municipal multidisciplinary key applied for research-oriented university with engineering as its core, where engineering, science, economics, management, literature, law, art and other disciplines are well in coordinated development. In 2018, USST became a pilot unit for the construction of “a high-level local institution of higher education” in Shanghai. With a total area of nearly 700, 000 square meters, USST has two campuses, Yangpu Campus and Fuxing Campus. There are 17 schools, colleges and departments with more than 25,700 full-time students (about 16,700 undergraduates and 9,000 graduate students). Of its 2,390 faculty & staff members, there are 11 academicians of Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Chinese Academy of Engineering (adjunct academicians included), 78 national-level talents, 155 provincial or ministerial-level talents, 826 teachers with senior titles, and 256 PhD supervisors.

Relying upon, supporting, and guiding the development of industries, USST has become a leading university in the academic fields of equipment manufacture, medical equipment and printing industry. The disciplines such as Power Engineering, Engineering Thermophysics, Optical Engineering, Management Science and Engineering have long been among the nation’s bests, and the university also has a profound industry found in the fields of medical instruments, publishing and printing industries. Recently, USST has been making further efforts to prioritize its disciplinary layout. There are 60 undergraduate programs, 8 first-class doctoral programs, 6 post-doctoral programs, 27 first-class master’s degree programs, and 18 professional master’s degree programs. USST has 19 national teaching platforms, 51 provincial or ministerial-level platforms, 7 national scientific research platforms and 34 provincial or ministerial-level platforms. Its Engineering, Materials Science and Chemistry have long ranked the top 1% of Essential Science Indicators (ESI) in the world.

SBC was established in 2006 as an innovative collaboration between the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology (USST) and nine leading UK universities. SBC combines the best of Chinese and British education in one of the world’s leading cities making it a truly international university college. SBC’s vision is to be known as an international gateway for excellence and innovation and we aim to foster an ethos of responsible leadership and cultural empathy within our students. We attract students and academics from all over the world to ensure that both our student's body and our teaching faculty operate in different cultures and practices. This makes the experience offered by SBC truly unique.

The campus of SBC is based in Fuxing Road campus of USST, which is in central Shanghai. The campus not only has a century-old history but also is of international atmosphere. Degree programmes are taught entirely in English across the whole spectrum of School of Business and Management,

SBC graduates have been recognised as having achieved great success both in terms of outstanding academic performance, social responsibility etc.

International Cultural Park

Shanghai International Cultural Park is located on the north campus of the University of Shanghai for Science & Technology (USST) on Jun Gong Road. USST is well-known in Shanghai. Its one hundred year history can be traced to the University of Shanghai founded in 1906 and Deutsche Eedizinschule founded in 1907. Many original buildings have been preserved and retained in the university, and are considered among the best-preserved historical buildings in the city. Six detached villas at the main campus on Jun Gong Road, built between 1907 and 1936, are former faculty residences. At present, they make up the Shanghai International Cultural Park. Currently, there are designated centres for Germany, America, Britain, Japan, Nordic-Baltic, Etc. Together they form a unique international cultural community on campus.

Significance

The International Cultural Park will integrate campus resources and build an international platform for cultural learning experiences. The Park will provide faculty, students and alumni of USST with an information clearinghouse for multicultural exchange and learning, and offer support and encouragement for scholars with international educational goals.

The Park will expand current international resources and provide support for the growth of programs in international cultural exchange. Through multicultural learning and exchange, the Park will attract more first-rate international resources, promote international cultural exchange, broaden students’ international horizons and promote their sensitivity to cultural differences.

The Park will promote the international development of the university and enhance its international reputation. Expanded international opportunities and multicultural exchanges will enhance the social impact of USST and raise the University’s visibility in the international scholarly community.

Functions

The International Culture Park directly contributes to USST’s current goal of providing “Excellent Engineering Education” through the five core functions of its cultural village:

International Cultural Learning: The Centers will sponsor scholarly lectures throughout the academic year in a broad array of academic disciplines that are part of the university curriculum. The USST community will have frequent opportunities to become familiar with a wide variety of different international voices in many academic fields.

International Cultural Experience: Representative programs will include a broad array of cultural experiences from the scientific and professional to the cultural and artistic.

International Special Programs: Thematic programs ranging from technology and innovation to language, traditional cultures and lifestyles will be scheduled from time to time providing an opportunity for in-depth exploration of topics of special interest.

Exchange and Cooperation between universities, International Education and Research Institutes: The diverse elements of the Park provide a unique opportunity for building cooperative programs in international research and education. The Park builds on current international partnerships through expanded communication and program planning.

Interaction and Cooperation between Universities and international enterprises: The Park creates opportunities to partner with a variety of enterprises from different cultural backgrounds in “zero distance,” and promotes internationalized school-enterprise cooperation.
